    Re: Meter

    me!

I tell them that meter is how we group the beats together; in
groups of 2, 3, 4, etc. We do body percussion as we count the
beats in songs in 2/4, 2/4, and 4/4. For 2/4 we do pat snap,
for 3/4 pat, clap, snap, and for 4/4 pat, clap, snap, snap. I
start out asking "How are we grouping our beats in this song?
In groups of 2, 3, or 4?" and they know to look at the top
number. When all of this makes sense I introduce measures,
barlines, and all of the proper terms. This has worked great
with 5th and 6th graders with very little previous rhythm
    study.
