Post: hostile parents
Posted by: anon on 11/08/09
Had a parent come in in front of all my students right
before a concert and tell me "First of all my daughter has
a skin problem and if her face itches she WILL scratch it"
and secondly, his other daughter has pneumonia and while he
brought her to the concert, he didn't know if he was going
to allow her to sing or not." Then he turned on his heels
and disappeared. I guess he is refering to our talk to
the choir about stage etiquette - not talking, playing with
their hair, keeping their hands at their sides etc. At
every grade level kids asked questions like "what if my
hairband falls off, or I pop a button on my shirt, or what
it another student throws up on me. What if my face
itches. You wait until your 2 minute song is over and you
are off stage to take care of it. Maybe "Itchy" asked
that question, can't rememmber, but I have never seen a
rash or her, nor seen her scratching either. When it
happened I was too busy with a performance to give it much
thought, but it kept rearing it's ugly head during
church. The human in me wants to write a sickly sweet
email about how I had no idea his daughter had a problem,
and she will be exempt from the rules that apply to
everyone else from now on, and how I appreciate him taking
his other sick daughter home before she infected six
others. And while I understood his great anger maybe next
time we could privately instead in front of all the
children- or better yet, Itchy could tell me herself that
she has a problem. Unfortunately, the sermon , which
intruded on my negative thoughts repeatedly, was on
forgivenes and how we are a witness to God's love in
everything we do. Darn it, I really wanted to tell him
off . So I'm venting to you instead and will be sweet to
Itchy in class. And I won't even ask her if she enjoyed
scratching herself on stage!
