I've been using his First Steps for several years and say that my young
children are much better singers because of it (echo songs, solo
singing, etc). I am using CS also now, but am a little uncertain about
it - at least the order of the units. I agree with another poster
that my kids are writing rhythms and reading them effortlessly - or at
least they were until we got to 6/8 rhythms with the quarter-eighth
notes. His first book units are 2/4 meter with quarter and eighth
notes, then 6/8 meter with three eighths or a dotted quarter, then the
more complex 6/8 rhythms followed (finally) by a melodic unit - do re
and mi.
We have covered these units so thoroughly that we haven't gotten to
melodic units yet. There are so many great activities that the kids
love - that combine the mental with the physical. I highly recommend
his videos Move it for the younger or Move It 2 for the older kids. I
even used one of them in a performace.
