If you have the original CD, use Windows Media Player or other
players that will let you "rip" the track as a .wav file, since .mp3
is a lossy compression, especially losing the high frequencies that
give clarity and definition to a track. If you're starting with mp3
then wait until you have the track ready to burn before exporting to
    WAV.

Not all songs are recorded in such a way that the vocals CAN be
removed. This only works if the vocals are panned center, an equal
amount of vocal in both left and right channels, and with little or
no reverb. If the vocals are panned either left or right then
mixing the phase inverted left and right tracks won't cancel the
vocals since there is more vocal in one side than the other; only
equal amplitude phase inverted signals cancel out. Reverb creates
unequal amounts left and right of the reverberations of the original
sound so the reverberations themselves do not cancel out.
