You can transpose the recorder music, if the kids have the notes. You can also give the recorders a part with beginning band music (usually down an octave from the flute part). I had one year where I had a ton of kids who wanted band, and not enough instruments, so we used recorder for the 5th graders who wanted to be in band and didn't have an instrument. We used some soprano, some alto recorders (for the kids who wanted to play clarinet-the fingerings are similar), and some tenor recorders (for would be sax players, trombone players and the like). I rewrote a lot of music that year, but it worked, and the next year, I had a really good group of 6th grade beginning instrumental students.
