Re: who gets band? advice!
Posted by LaurieA on 5/10/08

I think this should be one of the perks of being placed in a combo
class. Many parents do not like combos because they know the
teacher is having to split their attention and teach two sets of
standards. This would allow kids to get a year head start on
instrumental music. I would not have them switch instruments the
following year unless they wanted to try something new.

We have beginning band offered in 6th but some 7th and 8th graders
take it if they come to decide they want to learn an instrument
after 6th. Then intermediate and advanced band classes are
available for 7th and 8th graders depending on ability. There are
a few instances where a 6th grade student was placed in advanced
band, but only because they came in already knowing how to play.
Our middle school has 3 classes of beginning with 65 to 90 kids in
each section, intermediate has about 65 and advanced is currently
around 105. Then there is the percussion class of about 20 who do
a drumline program. Jazz is a before school class.
