    Stage parents!!!! ACK!!!!

I'm in elementary music myself, but I get it at that level
too! I've also put two girls through HS Choirs and have seen
the parents do the same thing to the HS director. Here's what
    I've seen that works:

Explain the audition process THOROUGHLY, to both parents and
students. It helps to say what you're looking for in detail -
pitch matching, balance, reliability, or whatever. Be sure to
tell how many students you are looking for and how many are
expected to audition (i.e. "I need 24 students for the top
group but I expect 50 to try out, so not everyone will make
the top group"). Perhaps have EVERYONE try out, even those
who were part of the top group this past year.

If you can have an audition TEAM - enlist another level's
music teacher to help you, and maybe a HS senior or two (one
you can count on to be fair and with no siblings moving up) -
that might eliminate any "this isn't FAIR".

And definitely - develop a thick skin and tough attitude.
Don't let stage parents get the best of you - you get the BEST
of the crop for your top group!
