Tara,
Okay -- you are so funny because you just voiced all of my
concerns too! :) I had a great program this year -- Rock
and Roll Forever!!! The kids loved the music, we dressed like
we were out of the 1950's -- okay, we'll to the best of our
ability -- the music was great, and the speaking lines were
simple enough -- but funny enough for them to remember. Plus,
this 5th grade class was wonderful (overall) to work with!!
So, now I"m thinking about next year -- January 30th is the
program -- I'm not sure if the kids will get into "spiritual"
type of music -- and choreography to that doesn't always lend
itself well. Plus, let me just give you an example of my 4th
graders -- on Wednesday, I had a class who would see me for
the last time -- it took 25 minutes to check in their
recorders!! They kept talking every time I said a name or a
number -- for some reason, this called for comments! So, I
would stop and wait! Then, after the recorders were finally
checked in, as I was trying to teach them the procedure to
Mallet Madness that I was using -- THEY KEPT TALKING! So, I
stopped -- and the last eight minutes of class, they looked at
the clock and did not say a word! Can you believe that? And
I'm supposed to do a program with them next year? Crazy!
So, I'm kind of in the same boat! I need to find fun music --
to keep them interested -- and yet, make the program simple
enough that they can understand and be able to do well. You
know, use the KISS strategy (keep it seriously simple!). :)
Yes, I'm worried about "topping" this musical that I put on
this year. That said -- I also know from experience -- if you
give the kids something that they can do - and if they look
cute doing it -- and if there is enough time between musicals
or programs -- people actually do forget. It's just that we
never do! After all, the parents aren't really critiquing --
they are only looking that their child do well and have a
great time!
I will also tell you that the program I did this year comes
from the Music express magazine - if John Jacobson puts it
into one booklet for everyone, I highly recommend it!
Good luck! We'll brainstorm together this summer for ideas. :)
