Re: Do you ever worry..(a little long)
Posted by PK-5 music teacher on 5/16/08

Just don't go from super up-to-date, to totally classical,
and you should still keep them coming in. Variety helps!

You could establish a new tradition of one "serious" concert
and one "fun" concert per year... or perhaps, a
mini-informance --just by showing the audience how students
get their music grade. Some kind of projected rubric on the
    wall or screen...

Don't let their accolades worry you. I'd just make sure the
concert was the right length. Watch out for trying to put too
much into it all. I can do 45 to 60 minutes TOPS in my area
    for ES.

Broadway songs on Orff? I can think of a few, you might have
    to change the key...

Castle on a Cloud is one I'd do in a heartbeat.

Here's what I did with The Words We Live By...performed as a
revue. About 37 minutes, but with no "narration", just one
line or two lines spoken by me to "switch" the numbers.

This is how I split the program up:
(I did use the CD for acc.)

The Words We Live By Grades 3, 4, & 5
The Preamble to the Constitution Grade 5
    The New Colossus Grade 4

Recorder Group: I wrote a part to go with this song on the
    last refrain and the descant.
    A, G, F, E four times. then A B G G G(or E). Wow. It sounded
great. Volunteers who gave up their lunch recess! (it helped
that I made it easy on purpose.)10 re3corder students filled
    the room!

That's the Golden Rule Grade 3
    The Star Spangled Banner Grades 3, 4, & 5
    The Pledge of Allegiance Grades 3, 4, & 5
Quotes of My Friend Ben Grade 3
    The Gettysburg Address Grade 4
Just Like Martin Luther King (I Have a Dream) Grade 5
    The Spirit of America Grades 3, 4, & 5
    ***********************************************************
    The best thing I did:
Got extra risers/kept the kids all up front until the end.
They sat in place when it wasn't their turn. Kept the audience
from leaving too soon. The superintendent said to order some
    (more risers)!

What I should do next time:
Hire a sub on dress rehearsal days. Changing the schedule on
    everybody is just plain hard!
Get sound gear over before it rains.
Changing the schedule on everybody is just plain hard!

Check the "reading level" of the songs. Gettysburg
    Address...for 4th grade...a real challenge.
anyway, all you can do is list the good, the bad, the
changeable and unchangeable and plan the next program from there!

:o) school's out soon... smile and have fun!
