Question for PE Teachers

I know this is for instructors only but I really need an instructor to answer this questionnaire. It would only take 5 minutes of your time. Please help.

1. Where are you originally from? 2. Where did you complete your undergraduate and/or graduate academic studies? 3. What did you major in as an undergraduate/graduate? 4. What made you interested in teach PE? 5. What would you be doing now if you were not involved in PE? 6. Did you always know you wanted to be a PE teacher? 7. Are you involved in any form or formal or informal research? (If "yes") Explain. 8. What factors were crucial to your decision to attend and earn a degree in the university and program of your choice? 9. What did you like best about the academic program you were part of? What did you like best about the academic program you were part of? What did you like least? Explain. CURRICULUM CONTENT AND PROFESSORS, IT WAS NICE HAVING THE SAME 4-5 TEACHERS FOR EACH CLASS EACH SEMESTER. THE PROFESSORS WEREN'T VERY NURTURING OR EMPATHETIC. I DIDN'T FIND OUT TILL AFTER I GRADUATED THAT ONE OF THEM THOUGHT I WASN'T CUT OUT FOR THE FIELD (I WASN'T ATHLETIC IN HS, I WAS A PERSONAL TRAINER). IF SHE HAD TOLD ME EARLIER I MAY HAVE RE-CONSIDERED MY DEGREE. 10. What courses that you took in college best prepared you for your current job? What other courses would you have liked to have taken? Explain. ALL THE COURSES REQUIRED YOU TO WRITE LESSON PLANS WHICH WAS A GREAT HELP SINCE THAT IS ALL THE SCHOOLS CARE ABOUT, THE ABILITY TO PUT ON PAPER HOW THE LESSON BENEFITS THE KIDS. NOTHING PREPARED ME FOR THE POLITICS OF PUBLIC EDUCATION BUT THEN AGAIN BACK WHEN MY PROFS TAUGHT THERE WAS PROB LESS POLITICS 11. What common characteristic do you see in fellow professionals you interact with? LUCKY ENOUGHT TO HAVE CO- WORKERS WHO TRUELY CARE FOR THE EDUCATION OF THE KIDS, NOT THE PAYCHECK OR THE POLITICS 12. What advice do you have for aspiring future professionals in your field? GET YOUR MASTERS DEGREE IMMEDIATELY AFTER BACHELORS 13. If you were in a position to hire a PE teacher, what qualifications and qualities would you look for in this individual? I THINK THE FIELD IS FLOODED WITH WASHED UP HS LETTERMAN TRYING TO LIVE OUT THEIR DREAM OR FIND THEIR PRIZED ATHLETE STUDENT. THEY NEED TO GO! WE NEED MORE PE TEACHERS THAT CARE MORE ABOUT THE HEALTH AND REALISTIC FUTURE OF THESE STUDENTS 14. What professional organizations are you an active member of? How do you keep up with new developments in your field? NJEA, AAPHERD, ACE. READ JOURNALS, ATTEND SEMINARS 15. Where do you see yourself in five years? IN ELEMENTARY ED 16. What do you think the future for PE teachers is? THEY WILL BE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN IN PUBLIC EDUCATION AS STATES ALIGN THEIR GOALS MORE WITH TESTABLE SKILLS MAKING PE AN 'ART'/SPECIAL INSTEAD OF THE REQUIREMENT IT IS. 17. Are there any interesting stories about your college days or your current work environment that you would like to share? THERE ARE LOTS OF PE TEACHERS OUT THERE THAT ARE VERY OLD SCHOOL, THEY TREAT CLASS LIKE PLAY TIME JUST PLANNING MINI- GAMES OF SPORTS ALL DAY INSTEAD OF TEACHING THE SKILLS FOR A FIT FUTURE. IT IS HARD TO BREAK THIS CYCLE AND BRING RESPECT TO THE FIELD 18. Who would you consider to be the mentor or mentors that have been the greatest influence in your career and why? MY COOPERATING TEACHERS WERE A GREATER INFLUENCE THAN ANY OF THOSE SAME 4 PROFESSORS I HAD DAY IN AND DAY OUT AT ROWAN.

1. Billings, Montana 2. Montana State University-Bozeman, Montana 3. k-12 physical education with health minor built in 4. I like to play! 5. No idea but hopefully it would involve a beach. 6. Pretty much 7. No 8. Location and friends. 9. Teachers (those in pe related classes) were fantastic for the most part. Some were "near retirement" and showed us how we didn't want to teach. Not all the older but a couple. We learned from all. The unrelated classes we had to take. I know, "we need well- rounded graduates." History of American Ag...really? That was my history elective. 10.All those related to the pe field. 11.Locally? younger pe teachers have some great new ideas. Even though I started teaching in '78 I consider myself one of these as I took a 17-year maternity leave and stayed current during those years. The ones who have been around for a while are pretty much still teaching the same thing they did 15 years ago. State/region-wise: the amount of enthusiasm shown by fellow pe teachers attending state aahperd conventions!! What a great bunch of exciting and fun pe teachers we have in MT- both with many years of experience as well as newcomers! 12.Talk to both old and new pe teachers about what classes they took in college so you can compare their schools. Talk to kids from different colleges presently attending school in pe and see which one fits you the best. I went to MSU in the 70's and my daughter went out of state in pe and I was so disappointed in her curriculum as compared to mine. She is now teaching and doing a great job in the same town as me and she is constantly coming up with questions that were so well covered at MSU...not about specific activities but about all-around teaching. 13.Energy level, excitement about their field, someone who is willing to work with "classroom" teachers with activities.. not field days but something like brain gym or 5 minute yoga breaks, etc. 14.Aahperd, Montana Officials Association 15.Browsing on the internet to find new programs and then pursuing them. Example: found BAVX program/ training sessions. I have traveled to 5 trainings from Spokane to Wichita and plan on more. That has escalated my fascination with the brain and changing several things I do in the gym. Also attending pe conventions and getting new ideas from other teachers. 16.Retired and living in a tropical paradise sipping margaritas!!! 17.Hopefully going stronger than ever. Somehow we need to convince those in power (who apparently don't keep current on educational research-unless it involves standardized tests instead of real life) that healthy body=healthy mind. 18.So many stories, so little time; we'll leave it at that. 19.Several of my professors from MSU. One in particular who taught several methods classes-always making it fun and ALWAYS had a great sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye! Thanks Fran Buckless!!!
