Re: Here's "rule of thumb" from GED & ACT prep
Posted by marjoryt on 4/20/08

    45 minutes for 225-300 words (that's 3-4 paragraphs).
90 seconds for "regular" multiple choice (no computation required)
1 to 2 minutes for computational problems

Because some students struggle with multiple choice questions,
and others struggle with essay questions, you don't actually
want to completely fill that time. This is especially true if
any of the students received extra time on tests (a common LD
    accommodation).

I normally plan for 1 1/2 hours; the speedsters finish in 45
minutes, and the slower students will take up to 2 hours and
    30 minutes.

Don't forget to establish the essay rubric when you create the
prompt, and add it to the question. If grammar counts, be sure
to state that, or you may be working through "text messagese".
