    Re: Crafting Writers
    Posted by judy3ca on 6/27/08

Oh, no, does that mean speedy Brad has read the WHOLE book?
I'm in Chapter 4. However, never known to lack an opinion...

The joy, huge joy, for me is that this book provides the exact
next step I needed. I'm more interested in her advice as
something I can immediately put into practice in individual
conferences than minilessons, and I love it. I have learned
to look at student work and see what's missing, but Hale is
helping me figure out GOOD directions in which to lead my
writers. I love that she uses the word SPECIFIC a zillion
times. I have often looked at a piece of student work and
thought, "Hmmm, needs details." I love that this book shows
me how to break that down to give the writer advice she can
really use, advice she can use over and over. I love how she
can take one teaching point, adding color, and show how we can
give kids several different ways of adding color. For me,
this is most useful because I always have such a huge spread
of ability. Last year I had highly-gifted K who could write
the socks off most adults, and then I had C who could barely
capture a thought (such as those thoughts were: I won in soccer).

So, that's my #1 hooray: how it will help me in conferences.
Do you see a big application for minilessons? What are your
overall thoughts on the book (I sure hope you like it).
