Post: Crafting Writers, Chapter 1
Posted by judy3ca on 6/27/08
Chapter 1 is just a short introduction, but it's where Hale
really hooked me with her intent. Like the teachers who
looked to her for help, I am much better with the 'how' of a
conference than the 'what.' For years, ever since I first
read Anderson's 'How's It Going?' and attended an all-day
workshop with him, I've struggled to find the perfect
teaching point. In Chapter 1, Hale explains she will share
the skills behind conferring. I want to learn from her how
to "notice craft in many different levels of writing and how
I made the more craft-like aspects of writing, such as
description and sentence fluency, more tangible for
students." Like Hale, I want to use "specific craft, not
just general concepts, that support the ability to write."
What jumped out at you in Chapter 1? What made you want to
keep reading? What made you say, "Aha!"
