    Re: Crafting Writers, Chapter 1
    Posted by judy3ca on 6/27/08

    dc: I noticed
this year at Open House (with my compare/contrast beginning
and ending writing samples) that my gifted writers were good
at the beginning of the year and they were still good at the
end of the year. I want to move them along on the continuum
and make them BETTER. I want to specifically be able to
notice the difference in their writing from the beginning of
the year to the end. I want their parents and more to the
point, the kids, to be able to see the specific craft that
they have included in their writing that was missing at the
    beginning of the year.

Judy: OH, YEAH! Hallelujah! This year I did do something I've
never done before. The last week of school I passed out their
Fall Writing Prompt papers. They read them and were darling.
"Hey, this isn't bad." Then I passed out their Spring Writing
Prompts. Since we didn't have time to recopy them (actually, I
didn't want to take time), the kids did notice that their first,
final draft, much shorter, prompts were neater (my downfall, I
don't stress it enough) and that the punctuation was more
consistent in some. BUT they were blown away by the CRAFT
comparison (and they did notice more sophisticated use of
punctuation when they bothered). However, the one thing I'll
caution: in my district it's pretty tough to get the parents to
understand progress in writing unless someone points it out
specifically; remember, most parents aren't trained writers. This
is why I like Celebrations where the kids can share one piece with
parents--they can point out the craft. And sometimes even bright
parents don't get that writing is learned: one of my favorite moms
said to me, "Wow, I didn't know he could write like this!" as if
it just popped out. Anyway, based on Hale, next year I'll repeat
the comparison but ask the kids to find specific craft examples
(and SHOW 'EM with our DOCUCAM!).
