I agree with the comment on fractions and manipulatives. I would
add to the list teaching adding and subtracting to first
graders. It doesn't have to be over done, but I always felt
letting my first graders "feel" the adding and taking away was
very important when we started with addition and subtraction.
I used the singapore math method to teach regrouping to the
students that were struggling with the concept in fourth this
year. This skill is taught in third, but I had a few that just
didn't understand what the marking out of the # and regrouping
was all about. Two of my girls would drag out the mats and use
the disks for the subtraction problems for a couple of weeks. It
drove me crazy, but they really seemed to need it. They did not
use the disks all year, and finally moved on.
