You guys may want to check out a book called "The Book Whisperer",
because you guys sound like the book somewhat. It is not a YA book - it
is a book written by a sixth grade teacher who apparently turns her
children into voracious readers and thinkers of what they read.
Unfortunately, I forget the author. I have just started it, but find it
very enjoyable, and a good reminder of what many teachers do, but
sometimes not always on a "consistent, pervasive,thoughtful, purposeful,
and systematic" way. The voice in the book reminds me a little of "Teach
Like Your Hair Is On Fire" by Rafe Esquith, who also has accomplished
amazing things with children.

The Comprehension Toolkit is an excellent source to help teachers help
students think about their reading.

I really enjoy reading this thread, so I hope it continues!!!
