Post: my first success
Posted by: judy5ca on 10/20/09
Our first shared novel was Hatchet. Now I'm reading them
Guests by Michael Dorris (which is working out superbly
because it's beautifully written, has tons of connections
with Hatchet, and is about native Americans--guess that
makes it a triple threat). Anyway, I read the end to a
chapter in Guests and paused. A brilliant student observed,
"Gary Paulsen would have said..." and explained how
Paulsen would have written Dorris's final words, and started
a discussion comparing Paulsen's style to that of Dorris.
Isn't that pretty amazing stuff for 5th grade???? I sure
hope so, 'cause I loved it!
