Re: Teaching to the Correct Level of Difficulty--learning

I just LOVE it that you're willing to let me grapple through it WITH
you and that you're so willing to help me! Yes, I most definitely
remember the triangles problem and that's why I called upon you again,
because when it's HARD, I call Jan and this board! Super ESIA to the
rescue!
OK, so here was my objective based on the task analysis:
1) The student will define (tell the meaning of) a mathematical
expression and write an example of a mathematical expression.
So what I thought was that the behaviors/activities were DEFINE and
WRITE and that the learning concept was "mathematical expression", but
I think what you're saying is that "define a mathematical expression"
is the activity itself. So I'm still so confused. What would the
learning be then and how would I write this on the board for the kids?
"I will define a mathematical expression and write an example of a
mathematical expression in order to show comprehension of mathematical
expressions so I can use them later for problem-solving."?????
That's way too wordy for kids and I don't understand how it would help
their understanding of the target. It seemed like it was very clear
to them that what they had to DO was define and WRITE an example and
what they had to LEARN was mathematical expressions. Help me again,
Jan. I know I must seem dense to you, but I want to be able to do
this correctly and make kids understand! Thanks!
