    Re: News from camp...
    Posted by: judy5ca on 11/04/09

I'm so glad to hear the fond camp memories. Although this is very hard
work for us teachers, it is an amazing experience for the kids and I
love learning about them in this new light. They are loving this experience.

We've hiked a ton, explored a lighthouse, hiked some more--even gone on
a night hike. The "educators" are adult group leaders, national parks
types, and they're great. We're the helpers and the behavior monitors.
I have every loopy boy from my own class in my group (and a bunch of
cool girls from the other classes).

Yesterday was the "big one." We took a 7 mile hike up (and down) a very
big hill (or a very small mountain) called Hawk's Hill. At the end
(after amazing solo walkdowns and an incredible view of San Francisco,
the bridges, the bay, and the ocean) I told my group that since they had
accomplished this (and it was very hard), they can do anything--and that
in the future when they face something difficult, they should just say
to themselves, "Hawk's Hill." Man, I'm getting teary just thinking of it.

Our major learning focus is watersheds. Today we're learning about pond
life and tomorrow is the new Marine Mammal Museum. The food is great!
I feel full all the time and dread the scales when I get home (where I
look forward to a very long shower followed by a long bath).

Thanks for your responses (oh, and our kids have to pay for camp,
thought we do give scholarships--it was $258 because we supplement with
gift wrap sales, water bottle sales, ice cream sales, etc.).

    Hugs to all,
    Judy
