This just makes me so sad. I don't think people realize
how we pour our hearts and souls into our jobs. To be
called "ineffective" just sent this poor man over the
edge. I don't know if it is still true or I am being
gender-biased, but I think for men, their identity is more
wrapped up in their careers than it is for women. I can't
imagine putting all of the time and energy that Rigoberto
put into his kids and then to be told in such a public way
that I was "ineffective". How disheartening.
I loved his principal's point of view. He said that he had
a different definition of "value-added". He said that
Rigoberto added value because he opened his classroom doors
early every morning to tutor children. He stayed late to
teach students English. He fed kids. He bought them
books. That's "value-added". Too bad that Rigoberto
couldn't hang on to that point of view to get him through
this tough time in teaching.
