>>Hi Stacy.
I am a special ed teacher that started at HS, and then 4-5, and
now I am resource reading teacher at 1-2. It was so tragic to see
high school students that had never learned the basics of reading
and had fallen through the cracks. Now I love trying to do early
intervention with 1st and 2nd graders. The same principles apply
to teaching reading at any age. Begin with the alphabet and the
phonemic sounds of letters. Then add the concepts of letters
forming words and words forming text or sentences.
My individualized curriculum classes taught me that you can take
any picture book (because authentic literacy is generally so much
more appealing to kids) and make it into a lesson. For instance,
rhyming is critical to learning word families or chunks (or some
refer to them as onset and rimes). Look up Usborne Publishing that
had lots of very cute picture books with practically a lesson made
out for you in each one. Look up one called "Fat Cat on a Mat." It
is part of their section called "Easy words to read, or A simple
phonics reader." The back cover had all the word families, with a
list of phonic words that are standard, and also a list of
irregular words. You can make it as simple or lengthy as you want.
Have the kids, or small guided reading group make a list of
rhyming words. Then divide them into a few, or several word
families. Cut them out if you want and continue to sort word
families (or chunks) in a writing center.
That's what I do and there are some awesome lessons from Patricia
Cunningham who is famous for word building ideas. Check out her
videos from a college library, they are terrific and full of
ideas. Good luck and hope that helped a little. I will take any
info that anyone has to pass along also and thanks in advance!
