Post: What does differentitation look like in ms LA/reading???

Posted by Looking for some ideas on 5/14/08

We are setting up next years middle school classes. I was
listening in on the conversation of the 6th grade teacher
and the TAG coordinator. THere are only 6 kiddos who would
qualify for TAG services in LA/Reading. so they are doing a
class with kids who scored 90 percent on ITBS with the TAG
    kiddos.

I would love to have my reading classes go back to being
mixed ability grouping. In the teachers.net gazette one of
the authors suggests that you can have differentiation in a
blended ability class. BUT, she was referring to elementary
and not ms. I am missing the exchange of ideas, challenging
questions and such in the mixed classroom. Now I have a low
class, a TAG class and three regular classes (very little
sped) how can I mix them up and teach in mixed ability?

How can I find research on doing this? Middle school seems
to be a void for research in differentiation and reading.

    Thank You!
