Re: Dyslexia, Learning Delayed, Lazy or just Stubborn???
    Posted by: Jo on 6/25/09

It probably was there all along and not noticed because many
of the usual signs can also be part of normal development.
For example, there may be many books in which her language
skills compensated for her lack of actual reading skills.
She may have a good graps of whole words but lack the
phonetic skills to back her up when she comes to unfamiliar
words or when pictures are not available.

It is easy to label lazy and subborn when a child is fighting
to avoid some task they see as unsurmountable and the
parent/teacher is trying to get them to do something they
just can in a way that makes no sense to them.

Best way to determine if it is dyslexia/ADHD is to have a
full evaluation. Chances with a father with dyslexia/ADHD
and the symptoms that are being described your child has a
weakness at minimum which needs different teaching.
Dyslexics can learn to read if given a quality multi-sensory
reading program using a highly trained teacher when used with
    the fidelity and intensity recommended.

Also, just because a child has 20/20 doesn't mean she doesn't
have functional vision problems. You can have 20/20 but
problems with the eyes working together which will cause
unstable vision. Only a developmental or behavioral
optometrist will be able to determine this. Other ODs don't
    typically check for this problem.
