Re: Dyslexia, Learning Delayed, Lazy or just Stubborn???

Dyslexia includes difficulty with rapid naming and recall, so if
she was under pressure (or just a bit nervous) at the
ophthalmologist's office to name the letters, she could have
difficulty with things she knew. My son is entering 3rd grade and
is dyslexic. Even though he's known the color names from age 3,
if you were to place a package of markers on the table and ask him
say the colors quickly, he gets very tongue tied and frustrated.
Most multi-sensory language programs, the ones that have been
proven successful for dyslexia, include components of rapid naming
practice. The International Dyslexia Association has more
information on their website re: this type of program.
If there is a family history of dyslexia, dyslexia could very
easily be the issue. As far as the resistance to reading and
writing, most dyslexic students are very bright. They understand
the rest of the class "gets" it and often have just given up. So
no, she's not lazy, just very frustrated. A good multi-sensory
program will work with an 90-95% known material and 5-10% new so a
student is not always frustrated, but feels successful.
A great source for information is Susan Barton's website, Bright
Solutions for Dyslexia. She has a series of videos that are a
great introduction to the signs and symptoms and interventions for
dyslexics. Warning: there is a bit of a sales pitch at the end
for her materials, but the information she presents in the initial
portion of the video is accurate and research based. Her program
is a good program if you need to teach your daughter yourself, but
as she will say, it's not the only effective program. She simply
packages a multi-sensory program to be accessible to those who
have not trained as a teacher.
