Post: Language Arts block scheduling help needed
Posted by: Thanks for any ideas! :) on 7/01/09
I will be teaching 4th grade reading, writing, and grammar
this year. I love these subjects, but the problem is I
will be teaching them to 3 classes. The amount of time I
will have per class will be about 1 hour and 45 minutes to
2 hours with several interruptions (pullouts, enrichment,
etc.). I want to spend an hour to an hour and 15 minutes on
reading, which would leave about 30 minutes for grammar or
writing. There will be no way that I can get all 3
subjects in one class period, so I was thinking of doing
reading and grammar one week and then reading and writing
the next week. I was thinking of doing a brief journal
time at the beginning of the class periods during grammar
week and a brief daily oral language type lesson at the
beginning of the class periods during the writing week It
sounds doable, but in reality when you take 5 - 10 minutes
out of an already short class period, then something else
will have to be shortened. Any thoughts? I do NOT want to
shorten my reading lessons. There is so much to teach in
reading. Also I have the responsibility of teaching
narrative and descriptive writings for THE TEST, so I am
already nervous about the lack of time. Any suggestions as
to how to schedule these subjects would be appreciated. :)
