    Re: 8th Grade Reading

My reading class is made up of struggling readers. I do alot
of modeling to them as a group. We then discuss as a group. I
sometimes allow them to ask the questions and I might answer
or have a student answer. We also work on finding meaning of
a word in context, forshadowing, irony, etc. I think that
students need a lot of modeling. We also do a lot of silent
reading. During this time, I will read at my desk to "model"
for them or go around and have a student read to me. I have
also done lit circles with this age group and they did well.
I have also allowed them to read the class novel out loud in
partners. From this, I do different activities. Alot, we
just come together and discuss what was read. Each student
has to participate in the discussion. Sometimes, I have them
prepare questions to ask other groups about what was read. I
try to keep it fun and not so tedious. That way, they will
learn to love reading and improve their skills.
