    Are you familiar with the Sentence Writing Strategies out of
    the University of Kansas? Look on Amazon for a book called:
    Proficiency in the Sentence Writing Strategy by Jean
    Schumaker. It's great direct instruction. You may want to
    teach the entire group of lessons and not just the
    independent/dependent clause lessons
