Re: Reading Recovery/ To Suzy
Posted by marann on 3/17/08

Afternoon Suzy, from the rainy 'wilds' of Southern BC! Thank you
for your compliment over on the Sp. Ed board. I would like to
return the compliment by saying how lucky we are to have someone
so seasoned and eperienced with reading intervention to help
answer our questions as we seek ways to bring children forth as
readers. I am always amazed at how early--in kindergarten and
grade 1--children who are having reading difficulties see their
whole educational experience as a black bottomless pit. It just
breaks the heart doesn't it? I had a little blonde haired
dumpling knock on the door frame of my LA/Resource Centre back
in October--my door is always open--and I would with this little
fellow's apraxic brother--and this little quavering voice asked
me if he could talk to me in secret. So in he came, and
whispered in my ear, that he could not read, and could I help
him, but he did not want his buddies to know. So I have a
wonderful, magical "lunch date" every day for twenty minutes and
we munch and read, and then he bops out to play with his
friends. He told his friends that I have been teaching for a
very very long time, and really needed someone to help me
organize my stuff--bless those little grade one minds--his
friends believed him. Early reading intervention really is
a "love affair for a lifetime" isn't it, Suzy?
