I teach SOAR in a middle school, and sometimes I just assign each
student one of the strategies, and tell them they are going to
model it after reading is done. I let them know I'm there to help
if they need it. If they balk at this, after my continued efforts,
they understand that they will need to see me at lunch to finish
their work. For discussion, how about doing think-pair-shares
first, so the more timid students can speak with a partner first.
When I do this, I purposely try to listen for anything my most
stuggling or unwilling students might say in the realm of being on
task, and then compliment them privately and ask them to share it
publicly. This often works for me.
