Post: dyslexia / middle school
Posted by co-teacher (first) on 12/30/08
Hi,
I have a parent who is asking for a test in dyslexia. Her
son (7th grade special ed student)seems to have a huge
processing problem that shows itself in all aspects of
school, as well as non-academic areas. He has trouble
following directions (both verbal and written), has a lot of
trouble with reading comprehension, and has a modified
workload. I am accommodating and modifying the curriculum
to ensure his success (has 80's and 90's for grades)
My question is - is there a test for dyslexia? Is it
something that is done in schools, or with a family doctor?
I know that dyslexia is a neurological language problem.
He does not show problems with phonic based activities, and
does not show other traits usually inherent with dyslexia
(average IQ, strengths in other areas such as artistic,
athletic, etc.) He is just your average learning disabled
child.
