Re: High school reading programs

Dear Chris -
I currently teach a Reading Intervention class for 9th
graders. The program that our school uses is PLATO Web. I
know that this program can get a bad rap. but I contend that
it completely depends on how your implement it in your
classroom. The amount of time students have to spend on a
single tutorial can be a little daunting but I find that if
you complement the computer instruction with more tactile and
if possible group work the results are quite good. It also
improves their reading comprehension if your consistenly
utilize the skills and strategies taught in the program with
regular classroom reading assignments.
I also know that our Special Education department uses two
programs with online parts. I have also used these programs in
a remedial class for students trying to pass our states high
school exit examination. They are called Measuring Up to
Reading and our special ed. teachers have had great success
with it.
Best of luck!
Amy
