Are you sure the student understands the meaning of "rhyming
words?" In case that is the problem, using consistent terminology
and repeatedly explaining why words do/do not rhyme usually helps.
This is the terminology I use:
Yat.... hat.... do these words rhyme?
Yes.
How do we know?
They rhyme because they both sound the same at the end.
And what do you hear at the end?
/at/
Correct!
Then I would move on from phonemic awareness to focus on the
spelling patterns.
Now, let's look at the words.
Yat.... hat.... do they look the same?
Yes.
What do you see at the end? What is their spelling pattern?
"a" "t"
Correct!
When running across words that rhyme that do not have the same
spelling pattern, I say,
Remember words that rhyme always SOUND the same at the end, but
they do not have to LOOK the same.
