Re: Is pluto a planet ?
    Posted by Annette on 5/22/08

How old is your textbook? A few years back Pluto was declared a
dwarf planet because it didn't meet the criteria of what makes a
planet a planet. If I remember correctly it mostly had to do
with the orbit of Pluto. Pluto has a more eliptical orbit
pattern compared to the other planets. The question of Pluto
being a planet came about because of another planet that was
discovered that was very similar to Pluto. So scientists
brainstormed a list of characteristics that planets should have
in order to be considered a planet. It just so happened that
Pluto didn't meet all of the characteristics. Hope this helps.
