Don't listen to the naysayers.
Being a sub is VERY different from having your own classroom.
And yes, a thousand times, yes, passion is needed and is
essential in the sciences. Without it, you won't succeed. It
IS contagious.
Will every student hang on every word you say? You already know
better than that. But the advice about establishing a
relationship with students (NOT a friendship; there is a
difference) has great validity.
Many will not care what you know until they know you care.
It is a tough world out there and getting tougher. With NCLB
and parents who don't have or don't want to take the time to
be parents, it can get sticky.
I've been at it for 26 years now. I've had tough times; I've
had good times. Yeah...kind of sounds like the prologue to
Tale of Two Cities, doesn't it? But that is exactly how it is.
Go for it. You will never know for sure unless you do. Again,
don't listen to the naysayers. They don't know your heart; you
do
