Over here these clubs are mostly based on recycling and
other environmental conservation awareness stuff, due to the
fact that in our layman language the word "ecology" came to
mean "environmental conservation"... Luckily I never had to
be in charge of one of these, as I am not interested in the
whole recycling/e.c. thing.
When you say you "have" to start an ecology club, I assume
your principal (and/or other admins) are pressuring you to
do so. If I had to form an "ecology club" group at the
school level, I would:
a) keep the group very small and composed only of students
who are really interested in ecology and able to do some
research work without engaging in distracting or dangerous
behavior;
b) give them a project on studying a certain patch of an
ecosystem reasonably close to the school campus; they would
have to put periodical updates of their project on bulletin
boards around the school, so their effort would be visible;
c) we would visit and participate in all events in the
community related to ecology/environment. Over here there
are various organizations that celebrate important
ecological/environmental dates (recycling day, Earth day,
birdwatching day), and they need visitors and participants;
we would have our pictures taken to put on the said bulletin
board; it would be great if some of the students would be
interviewed by the TV station covering the event.
(but I would stay as far away as possible from being in
charge of a permanent school-based recycling project)
