You need to check your state standards. Then check of the
National Science Foundation website. Sci Links is also good.

In Texas, 6th grade is more geared (according to the new TEKS)
    toward physical sciences.

First you better check out what type of lab equipment the 6th
grade has, where you will do experiments, what disposables
there are (and how they are paid for).

If it is fully supplied - great. If not so good....start a
collection.....(garage sales always come in handy)
    straws
    baby food jars w/ lids
    plastic spoons
    hand lens
rock collections (that someone doesn't want anymore)
little hand shovels (dollar general did have them for $1)
    marbles
    matel cars
pieces of wood (2X4's about 3-4 foot long)
    plastic dixie cups
    baking soda
    vinegar
    salt
    mineral oil
    oil
    stirofoam pieces
    balls of various sizes
    containers of various shapes
I like to have a cafeteria tray for each lab station
    flash lights
    wire
    pebbles
    sand
    stones
    potting soil
    samples of wood
    sand paper
    coffee filters
    meter sticks
    stop watches
    small mirrors
    variety of buttons
    candles
packing materials (stirofoam peanuts, that plastic stuff with
the air pockets in it, thin stirofoam sheets, corrugated cardboard)
    playdough or clay
    alligator clamps
    levers
    pulleys
different materials -- opaque, translucent, clear, reflecting

Maybe your students will be required to bring:
    markers
    colored pencils
    scissors
    rulers
    tape

There is alot more that you will need. Hopefully your school
will have all the more expensive lab type equipment.

It will be a big change, but you'll love it after you make the
    change.
