There are all kinds of alternative energy ideas for home use.
Solar, wind and hydro are ones I can think of off the top of my
head. There are also energy saving devices for the home like
LED lighting, computerized smart homes that efficiently use
appliances etc.

A paper and presentation with a scale model/poster would be
great, or you could let them choose their own presentation
media. I had a HS class once where we were allowed to do this
and it was surprising how creative the students were. People
did film, plays, scale models, photo displays....you get the
idea. It sounds like a fun project.
