First it is the last activity I do during my Cell Structures Unit
and I really think it really cements it for the kids.

Second, I am using the opportunity to model for them how to make
    models.

They have a five column chart...cell structure, the job it has in
the cell, where it lives in the cell or something special about
it's appearance (ie: mitochondria shaped like a jelly bean, the
er raps around the nucleus), what material they are going to use,
    why they are using it.

This is what I give each pair for an animal cell.

A paper plate to make the cell on.
A cup with cake frosting in it (cytoplasm)
A cup of candy with the following...

three pieces of licroace (cell membrane)
nucleus and nucleolus (oreo...i tell them to take off one side)
    gummmy worms (er)
    licroace bits (golgi)
    cake sprinkles (ribosomes)
    jelly beans (mitochondria)
    M and M's (lysosomes)
    rasinettes (chromosomes)

They have to do the first three colums of the chart and then get
my ok. Then they get the candy and frosting and do column,
four...the planning..then get my ok...then do the last column and
then get my ok...and then they may make the model. They show me
the model, easy to check it, then they may eat it. Nothing like a
    sugar high!

I put a challenge on the bottom for my honors classes..or whoever
    wants to do it.

If this were a plant cell, what parts would be added, what are
their functions, what kind of candy would you use for that and why.

I get vacuole - blue fruit rollups, chloroplast - green gum drops,
cell wall - green licroace (they do sell it) or green fruit by the
    foot.

After clean up and then explaining their project assignment of
making a plant cell model for hw, he whole thing from beginning to
    end takes about 75 minutes.

The shopping for it cost me about 100.00 for 120 kids using
partners but we have a consumable's budget.
