It is a primary producer. It makes it own food via
photosynthesis. It does break down organism, but not for
energy, but for Nitrogen. The leaves of the plant have evolved
in conditions with poor levels of nitrogen. Living animals
(insects) have lots of protein = amino acids = amino groups =
Nitrogen.
Plants require Nitrogen for Nitrogen fixation.
