Post: Independent Reading/Pre-noting?
I also posted this in the Middle School chatboard, but I
would like input from Science teachers, too.
I would like to take one class period per lesson for
students to read each Science Chapter/Section and take
pre-notes independently.
I will still explain all the concepts. I may be idealizing
and imagining that I can get students to take
reflection/clarification/graphic organizer notes more
efficiently if they already have a section of their notebook
with the science concepts written in sequence.
I've looked at Cornell notes, but the format seems too
complex for students to beginning the lesson with
independent reading.
My students have commented that there is no need to ever
read a book, because I tell them everything that they need
to know.
I think I may be doing my students an injustice for their
future education if they never have to learn to even try to
read the textbook. I teach 8th grade Science. Does anyone
give the responsibility of READING a lesson to students? Am
I expecting too much from them? What format do you use for
independent notetaking?
