I feel the same way at times. I give them notes and they
really don't have to read those sections and i question if
this is a good thing. I especially question it when several
students are just sitting there staring into space.
What I do for some chapters is to create something I
call "Guided Reading". I essentially read the assignment
making up questions as I go (marking them in the text). Some
questions are merely completion of a sentence in the text. I
explain to the students that they have to read the assignment
carefully and that my questions are in order. Using this
technique I can focus the students on important parts by
asking appropriate questions and also ensure that they DID
read it by throwing in sentence oompletion type questions. I
list the objectives at the beginning of the sheet. I
generally use a two column format and none of them are more
that two sides.
This works great for post test work. While others are
finishing a chapter test the rest of the class can start on
this assignment. Of course, while the class is working, I can
be doing other things! I'll play music at times while this is
going on...physical science...juniors and seniors.
