Post: Teaching Genetics/Punnett Squares

I am doing introductory obsersvation in a 7th grade English
and Science classroom, but my cooperating teacher has been
on leave for the last few days. There has been a substitute
teacher in the classroom, and together we have been trying
to maintain the routine so the children don't fall behind.
In Science, we have been trying to teach the kids about
basic genetics; Mendel, Punnett Squares, traits,
inheritance, etc.
It is too complicated for the kids! I have been having a
hard time explaining Punnett Squares to the kids;
heterzygous/homozygous traits are hard for them to grasp
because you have to start at the P generation and move down
through F1 and F2 before you see the full picture.
Does anyone have an effective method for making basic
genetics more simple for a 7th grader to grasp? I remember
fumbling with these concepts when I was in high school, but
now the kids are learning these things so much younger!
