I teach 8th grade physical science, but I used to do elementary
school science programs, and some of the hands-on stuff we
would do include:
1. make ice cream - fun, simple, but messy - nice change of
state activity as well as talking about mixtures
2. make "water" molecule models out of mini-marshmallows (the
hydrogen), regular marshmallows (the oxygen), and pretzels -
the bonds.
3. density columns - in a baby food jar pour colored water,
shampoo or corn syrup, and corn oil - it should form three
layers. It's really fun to do in this order: oil, shampoo,
water, because the shampoo sinks beneath the oil and then the
water ends up in the middle - you can have the kids guess where
they think the layers will be. you can also put stuff like
cork or raisins in there to float at the different levels.
4. let them weigh and measure stuff with scales and and
measuring cups.
Hope that helps!
