One of my 6th grade students (now in 7th) told me today that he learned to love science last year in my class. I asked "what did you learn?" He looked at me blankly.

Ugh!
my take That's OK. Students at that age don't always have the verbal skills to do an on-the-spot summary of what they learned! I think it is wonderful that he came to you, initiated a conversation and told you that your class was inspiring and meaningful in his life! What a compliment! Enjoy!

Betty Ann I suspect that having a positive attitude is likely to be more valuable to him than specific pieces of information. I'm sure he learned content also--but, likely more importantly, he now WANTS to learn science. It's been a year and he may be having difficulty sorting out what he learned which year. retired You put him on the spot. He gave you a compliment and you responded by giving him an oral exam! In the future, say something like "Thanks! What parts did you like best?"
