Re: Teaching the Magna Carta

I can't say much about teaching the Magna Carta as I tend to blow
through it very quickly. I have a couple songs my students
analyze that I got from a British Rock Opera about the Magna
Carta. I can pass those on if you're interested.
For Luther though, I've got a ton of stuff. My favorite thing I
do all year comes from TCI. You give the kids a quiz that they
are all but destined to fail. You then offer to sell them extra
credit (I have an "official" memo printed out from The District
that I read explaining that this is a way to improve our budget
situation.) You then go around and actually collect the money
from the kids. As you are doing this they are reading an
explanation of what indulgences are. Invariably some kid will
speak up and say "Hey, this is like what you're doing!" Then
you've got 'em.
I also have a set of 9 stations students visit to learn about
various Reformation topics such as Latin Mass, the Inquisition,
and Luther's cartoons.
Finally, this year I'm trying something new. I'm going to show
the students a movie clip (Madagascar!) in french and then give
them a quiz on it, also in french. I will then show the clip in
english and give the quiz in english to show how much easier it
is to be successful. I will use this to help explain why
translations of the Bible were so contraversial. I'm also
considering having a student buy the right to grade the quizzes
however they wish to simulate simony but I may put that off for a
year.
All my resources are available at my site below. Hope it helps!
