Sometimes I give more fill-in-the-blank type notes but these are
usually based on something other than the textbook. I find with
fill-in-the-blank notes that they will only skim and not absorb
the text to find the answers.

You can just hand them the notes as well but you will still have
students who don't do well because they don't know how to study
them or students who will forget them immediatly after the test.
You have to do hands-on activities to get them to remember them.

I teach sixth grade so I also have study sessions to help those
students who don't know how to study. These have been very
effective except for kids who try to rely only on the one study
session I give before the test
