I do not give "notes". In 30 years of teaching I've discovered a
sure-fire way to kill a kid's love of history is to burden them with
endless note-taking.

Now, having said that...I do teach students that taking notes is a
good and useful skill. Not everyone learns the same way. Some kids
need notes, others don't.So, I teach several ways to take notes ( I
lean toward Cornell method).I also post links to sites which can
teach students to take notes various ways.

We use different types of graphic organizers, we write using various
techniques ( lists, narrative analysis, etc...).We read, write,
think, discuss, and create.

If I had to stand and "give" notes everyday, I'd blow my brains out!
LOL. I use my overhead for art transparencies of the period we study.

I'm not knocking the usefulness of note-taking, I'm just not going to
bog down the pace of the class and the fun of discussion and activity
with endless pages of the same material that's already in front of them.
