I use interactive notebooks. The link below will give you
ideas on how to use them.

I teach 5-8 SS. In 5/6 I teach various ways of taking notes
from their readings (text. articles, primary sources, etc.) -
outline, cornell, focus notes, graphic organizers or mindmaps,
etc. Each unit is a different method. In 7th and 8th we
review the different methods during the first unit and after
that they can choose their own method of note taking, or use
the one I suggest. We also have a page we glue into the
notebook with the benchmarks for that unit turned into
specific questions. Usually I break them into groups to
answer the questions based on their notes. We then go through
them together as a class.
