Re: What kind of notes do you give and how do you give them?

I love this thread. I suspect everyone's opinion (as most opinions) are
based on our own personal experiences in the past and feedback from former
students. It is interesting to see how diverse they are.
Personally, I hate taking notes. But the amount of feedback I get from
students thanking me for teaching them this skill tells me that I am teaching
them a skill they need to know. Since the text book is not my curriculum -
only a tool - we gather our information from different sources. All of this
information needs to be compiled in some way and note taking is a good way to
do it. In addition, writing the notes is another way of retaining the
information taught.
Is notetaking fun? As a whole, probably not, although most students,
realizing that it is a "necessary evil" have their favorite forms of
notetaking.
Since I am the teacher, the class does focus on me - whether I am doing
direct teaching, guiding them through a project, or dividing them into small
groups. As teacher I am the facilitaor and am responsible for making certain
they are exposed to and understand the material they need to know. How we do
this I think has much to do with our teaching style and our student
population.
