Any teacher who ridicules a child fro expressing a viewpoint should not
be teaching. I tell my students - you may express any view you'd like in
here. There are only two rules for discussions - no profanity, and you
must respect others when you speak.
Regarding political personalities- say anything you'd like about their
policies and stands on issues - but you may not denigrate them personally.
If you ask me a question about where I stand and I choose to answer, you
do not have to agree with me. You need not ever feel threatened if we
disagree on something.
I do not think it is possible for a teacher to stay absolutely neutral
on everything, but we can be respectful, tolerant, and professional.
We should not fear vibrant discussion - we NEED to talk about issues and
model the correct way to do that.
